A day in the life of a PPO plan

March 2nd, 2009

Many people get confused about health insurance. Since the PPO is the most popular plan we will help you understand your PPO in the most basic way possible. We will give you examples and word for word descriptions of the most confusing aspects of a PPO plan.

PPO is an acronym for Preferred Provider Organization. A PPO basically allow you to go to any physician of your choosing, but offers negotiated rates for using a physician in the network. Consumers prefer this plan over the more restrictive HMO.

A PPO typically has a deductible. You must pay the amount before the will share any cost with you. So if you go in the hospital and you have a $2500 deductible, you would pay that amount before the insurance company would pay anything or start sharing any cost.

Ok so now you are confused about “sharing the cost”, right? This is called co insurance. Once you meet your deductible you then have to satisfy the co insurance. You may have to pay 20% up to an additional $3000.

Insurance should not be ignored

February 23rd, 2009

Health insurance, Life insurance, homeowners and automobile insurance are all very important facts of life.  they should never be taken for granted.  You should also make sure you have adequate coverage.   Another typed of insurance you can carry on you and your vehicle is comprehensive insurance. This also has limits to its coverage. There is also uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, this coverage insures you against certain losses caused by other drivers with low amounts, or no insurance.

Something else you can add to your auto insurance coverage is called Personal Injury Protection or PIP, this coverage will cover medical or funeral expenses for passengers as well as people on your policy as passengers, drivers or even pedestrians in the case of injury caused by an auto accident.

Additional coverage that you might want to consider when buying a new car is called Gap Insurance. This insurance will pay the difference between the actual cash value of your car and the amount you owe on your loan or lease if your car is totaled in a covered accident. If you do not have Gap Insurance and you are involved in an accident no matter the fault, sometimes the money you receive from the auto insurance company does not come close to paying what you owe on your vehicle. This is where gap insurance comes into play.

Are you sure that if you are in an accident, you, your vehicle, your passengers, etc…. will all be covered? Do you have enough coverage to keep an accident from putting you in debt? It is very important to understand the coverage’s and limitations to the coverage’s you have with your auto insurance. Take the time to make sure you are covered for all situations.

How does a PPO work

January 23rd, 2009

The PPO product is a very popular choice for consumers looking for Kansas Health Insurance

The most difficult component of this plan for the consumer to understand is the Maximum out of pocket.  Where does this number come from?  It is the deductible plus co insurance limit.  On an 80/20 there is a maximum you would have to pay like $2000 and then the insurer would pay 100%.  So for this example your maximum out of pocket would be $2000 (deductible) + $2000 (co insurance) = $4000 total out of pocket.

Many times members of a PPO are required to pay a co-payment for specified medical treatments.  You may have to pay a co-pay each time you visit a doctor or each time you get a prescription.  This benefit is helpful for the consumer, because he helps to offset part of the medical expenses.

Why is PPO so popular?  The main reason is freedom of choice.  You can choose what medical professionals you see.  Even if you go out of network you are covered.  With an HMO you must stay within network to receive any benefit at all.

PPO plans have many plans to choose from and can be expensive in certain circumstances.  Rates are based on the plan benefits and individual factors such as location, health and age.  You should base the decision to choose a PPO on your medical need and the funds you have available.
